#MeToo Movement Is Person Of The Year, ‘Time’ Says

New York City 4 CEDAW Act Posted on December 13, 2017 by hkatzmanJune 19, 2019
#MeToo rose to prominence as a social media campaign in the wake of high-profile accusations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. After actress Alyssa Milano popularized the hashtag, thousands of women began sharing their stories about the pervasive damage wrought by sexual harassment and by “open secrets” about abuse.

The movement’s empowering reach could be seen in the platform on which Time announced its choice: the Today show. It was just one week ago that NBC fired the morning program’s longtime and powerful co-host, Matt Lauer, over a detailed complaint of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.”

New York City 4 CEDAW Act Posted on May 3, 2017 by hkatzmanJune 19, 2019

On April 24th 2017, members of the NYC4CEDAW Coalition testified at the New York City Council’s Committee on Women’s Issues. At issue were four bills pertaining to Women’s Rights.

•Int 1500-2017  •  Int 1512-2017  •  Int 1520-2017  • Res 0542-2015

The general feeling amongst coalition members is a reserved agreement. While there is a strong feeling for the need to gather data about women in New York City and to empower a commission to assess the City Government’s performance in this area; there were reservations…

International Women’s Day

A note from, Azadeh Khalili, Executive Director for the Commission on Gender Equity

International Women’s Day is a day of reflection and strategizing.  We want to think about how much we gain by women’s liberation and gender equity and how much we lose without them.

CEDAW Call to Action: Building a Rights-Based System for Lasting Change

New York City 4 CEDAW Act Posted on January 24, 2017 by Ericka DixonJune 19, 2019

Black Women’s Blueprint seeks justice-minded community organizations across the five boroughs of New York City to join the Grassroots Organizing SubCommittee of the NYC for CEDAW Campaign Coalition. We are expressly interested in campaign partners from a diverse array of identities and backgrounds that are able and committed to mobilizing their constituency in order pass a Women’s Bill of Rights right here at home.  This is an exciting opportunity to join a national campaign which proudly proclaims that women’s rights are human rights – and refuses to yield to the myriad of threats posed by the new Administration in Washington DC by building power and avenues for transformation and recourse at the city level.

NYC4C’s speech to the Cities 4 CEDAW conference

New York City 4 CEDAW Act Posted on November 18, 2015 by juanpecanJune 19, 2019

New York City has a population of 8.4 million people. We are the largest city in the United States and over twice the size of the 2nd, Los Angeles. One out of every 38 people residing in the United States lives in New York City. We have a larger population than 40 of the 50 states. We are incredibly diverse, with representatives from virtually every country in the world and virtually every language of the world is spoken in our city. This is the city that we wish to organize with NYC for CEDAW.

We have had to ask ourselves some very fundamental questions as we formulate a local law for Women’s Rights. New York City has a well-developed human rights law with Title 8 of the Administrative Code and the Human Rights Commission. Are we intending to highlight any rights that are not already covered in the law? How do we create a sustainable institution, not just a law? How do we create an institution that will survive beyond the next election and will have the support and, most importantly, the participation of New York City residents?
